A Tribute to John Stone — The Vision Behind Riverstone

In 1999, John Stone purchased two neglected parcels along the Spokane River — a shuttered sawmill and a mined-out gravel pit — and saw something no one else did: a thriving community where people could live, work, and walk.It wasn’t easy. The 9/11 slowdown tested his resolve. The 2008 recession nearly ended it entirely.

Furthermore, most developers would have walked away. John Stone did not.

Twenty years later, his perseverance produced one of the most celebrated developments in the Pacific Northwest — 160 acres, over $350 million in investment, 100+ businesses, three hotels, hundreds of residences, and more than 5,600 jobs created for the people of North Idaho.

What was once an abandoned sawmill is today a neighborhood where families gather, residents walk to dinner, and the Centennial Trail winds through a landscape that didn’t exist a generation ago.

Coeur d’Alene is a better place because of John Stone’s vision, determination, and refusal to quit.

With gratitude — I think I speak for the people of Coeur d’Alene, when I say “Thank you, John”.
